How to Borrow & Return Tools
How to Borrow & Return Tools
Most tools in ToekomstTech are for in-space use only. Some items — particularly test equipment, specialised hand tools, and kits — can be borrowed overnight or for a weekend project.
In-space use
The majority of tools (power tools, benches, printers, etc.) stay in the space. Just pick them up, use them, and put them back where you found them.
If you move something from one zone to another, move it back. A drill press that migrates to the Common Area is one that someone else can't find in the Workshop.
Borrowing for home use
Tools marked with a green label can be taken home temporarily. The process:
- Scan the QR code on the tool with your phone.
- The inventory page for that tool will open. Tap "Borrow".
- Set a return date (maximum 7 days for most items, 3 days for high-demand items).
- The tool is now checked out to your account.
You'll receive a reminder notification 24 hours before your return date.
Returning tools
- Bring the tool back in the same condition you borrowed it.
- Scan the QR code and tap "Return".
- If you encountered any issue with the tool during your loan, tap "Report an issue" before returning — this flags it for inspection.
What happens if I'm late?
You'll get a Slack DM from the bot on the day it's due. If you return it late without communication, you may lose borrowing privileges temporarily. If you need more time, extend the loan before the due date via the inventory page.
Damaged or lost tools
Accidents happen. If you damage a borrowed tool:
- Report it immediately via the inventory system (tap the tool's QR code → Report issue).
- Post in
#workshopon Slack so the community knows it's unavailable. - Contribute to repair or replacement costs where reasonable — the community will discuss it fairly.
Hiding damage and returning a broken tool without reporting it is a serious breach of trust.
Tools that can't be borrowed
Some items are in-space only due to safety, insurance, or high demand:
- Power tools (circular saw, angle grinder, drill press)
- Oscilloscopes and bench power supplies
- 3D printers (obviously)
- The resin printer and its chemicals
If you need to use these for a project at home, talk to the community — sometimes members have personal equipment they're happy to lend directly.
